DSA expresses solidarity with Haiti’s ongoing struggle for self-determination
[Translated into Haitian Creole below / Anba nou tradwi pou kreyòl]
Since January 10, 2021, the people of Haiti have been in the streets demonstrating against President Jovenel Moïse’s illegal attempt to extend his term to 2022 from the lawful date of February 7, 2021. Moïse claims that due to political chaos, he can extend his rule by decree for another year. However, at the ballot box, Moïse has only been able to demonstrate the support of 10% of the Haitian population, and it is clear that he has lost the mandate of the people of Haiti.
While we are continuing to observe the situation, we are deeply disturbed by Moïse’s attempt to remain in power beyond his constitutional term limit, and support the people of Haiti in their struggle against a U.S.-sponsored dictatorship. As the first nation in the world to overthrow and ban slavery, Haiti is a symbol of justice to the globe, and we strongly oppose any attempt to erode Haiti’s democracy, already under threat from decades of interference from the United States security apparatus.
The U.S. State Department has offered only token resistance to Moïse’s power grab, and the Organization of American States (OAS) has officially endorsed his postponement of a democratic election and has supported an intervention to halt dissent.
With the understanding that protests and other actions in the U.S. have the ability to affect the politics of other nations, DSA IC urges DSA chapters nationwide to express solidarity with the people of Haiti. Furthermore, we call upon the Biden administration, the U.S. State Department, and the OAS to recognize the right of the Haitian people to a new president.
DSA ap voye solidarite ak lit Ayiti pou otodetèminasyon
8 Fevriye 2021
Depi 10 janvye 2021, pèp ayisyen pran lari pou manifeste kont tantativ ilegal Prezidan Jovenel Moïse pou pwolonje manda li pou 2022 apati dat legal 7 fevriye 2021. Moïse di ke akòz dezòd politik li gen dwa pwolonje pouvwa li pou yon lòt ane. Sepandan, nan bwat bilten vòt la, Moïse te sèlman kapab demontre sipò 10% nan popilasyon ayisyen an e li klè ke li pèdi konfianz pèp ayisyen an.
Pandan ke nou ap kontinye obsève sitiyasyon an, nou preokipe pwofondman pou tantativ Jovenel Moïse ta rete sou pouvwa pou plis tan ke jan konstitisyon peyi a etabli a. Ayiti deja anba menas entèferans enparalis Etazini.
Depatman Deta Ameriken ap travay ak Moïse, e Organizasyon Eta Ameriken yo (OEA) te ofisyèlman kont yon eleksyon demokratik e li te sipòte yon entèvansyon pou sispann movman mas pèp la.
Nou konprann aksyon Etazini genyen kapasite pou afekte politik lòt nasyon yo, DSA IC ankouraje militan DSA yo nan tout peyi pou yo eksprime solidarite yo ak pèp ayisyen an. Anplis de sa, nou mande administrasyon Biden nan ak Depatman Deta Ameriken an, ak OEA pou rekonèt dwa pèp ayisyen an pou yon nouvo prezidan.
