DSA IC Stands with President Petro and Expresses Support for the Ceasefire between the Colombian Government and the ELN

The Democratic Socialists of America International Committee congratulates President Petro and the Pacto Histórico coalition for their first year leading the first progressive government in modern Colombian history and rejects the media smear campaign against Petro’s administration. 

On June 19th, 2022 the Colombian people voted resoundingly for change and the Pacto Historico has delivered: implementing a historic land reform, working to end Colombia’s internal conflict, leading the fight against climate change, and pushing for much needed health and labor reforms in Congress. However, the right-wing opposition has stepped up its attacks against Petro through parliamentary obstruction and a media smear campaign.

We stand firmly with the Petro Administration in the face of the destabilization campaign being organized by the elite-controlled media, the right-wing opposition, and the Colombian Attorney General’s Office. This campaign has included the fabrication of scandals by the right-wing outlet Semana, resistance from the Attorney General’s office to implement many of the Petro administration’s policies, and now using the legal troubles of President Petro’s son to undermine the change that the Colombian people demanded at the ballot box. We stand with President Petro and the Pacto Histórico in emphasizing that neither President Petro nor his campaign had anything to do with illicit funds.

We urge the U.S. government to ignore the efforts of Colombia’s right-wing opposition to use this event to undermine the first progressive government in Colombian history. We further urge the the Biden administration to reject Republican attempts to disrupt foreign aid to Colombia, including aid intended to implement the peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and to deepen cooperation with the Colombian government’s progressive agenda and peace processes, for which the Colombian people decisively voted.

We would also like to express support for the ceasefire between the Colombian government and National Liberation Army (ELN) that began on August 3rd. It is an important step to consolidating a lasting peace and democratic reforms in Colombia. The current media allegations against Petro’s administration imperil the peace process with the ELN and the implementation of the peace agreement with the FARC. We further denounce the false accusations of an assassination plot leveled by Colombian Attorney General Barbosa and Semana against the ELN, also intended to undermine Petro’s peace agenda. We demand that the U.S. government recognize the role it has played in fueling the Colombian internal conflict, remove the ELN from the State Department’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations, and remove Cuba from the State Sponsors of terrorism list for its support of the peace process.

El Comité Internacional de Socialistas Democráticos de América felicita al presidente Petro y al Pacto Histórico por su primer año al frente del primer gobierno progresista en la historia moderna de Colombia y rechazamos la campaña de desprestigio mediático contra la administración de Petro. 

El 19 de junio de 2022, el pueblo colombiano votó rotundamente por el cambio y el Pacto Histórico ha logrado: implementando una reforma agraria histórica, impulsando una paz duradera, liderando la lucha contra el cambio climático, e impulsando las reformas laborales y de salud en el Congreso. Sin embargo, la oposición derechista ha intensificado sus ataques contra Petro a través de la obstrucción parlamentaria y una campaña de desprestigio mediático. 

Apoyamos firmemente a la administración del Presidente Petro frente a la campaña de desestabilización organizada por los medios de comunicación elitistas, la oposición derechista y la Fiscalía General de Colombia. Esta campaña ha incluido la fabricación de escándalos por parte de la revista de derecha Semana, la resistencia del fiscal Francisco Barbosa a implementar muchas de las nuevas políticas de la administración Petro, y ahora a usar los problemas legales del hijo del presidente Petro para impedir el cambio que exigía el pueblo colombiano en las urnas. También queremos expresar nuestro apoyo al cese al fuego entre el gobierno colombiano y el Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) que comenzó el 3 de agosto. Es un paso importante hacia la consolidación de una paz duradera y reformas democráticas en Colombia. La de desprestigio mediático contra la administración del presidente Petro pone en peligro el proceso de paz con el ELN y la implementación del acuerdo de paz con las FARC. Denunciamos las falsas acusaciones del fiscal Barbosa y Semana contra el ELN, con la intención de socavar la agenda de paz de Petro. Exigimos al gobierno de los Estados Unidos que reconozca el papel que ha jugado en alimentar el conflicto interno colombiano, retire al ELN de la lista de Organizaciones Terroristas Extranjeras del Departamento de Estado y retire a Cuba de la lista de Estados Patrocinadores del terrorismo por su apoyo al proceso de paz.
