Solidarity with Apruebo Dignidad and the Chilean Constitutional Process

The Democratic Socialists of America International Committee (DSA IC) stands in solidarity with the Apruebo Dignidad coalition and the representatives of social movements that drafted a proposed new Constitution, intended to replace the Pinochet-installed Carta Magna of 1980. The new draft incorporated important rights for women, workers, and indigenous communities, and decommodified key social rights such as the right to education. For that reason, the DSA IC is disappointed by the results of Sunday’s plebiscite, which rejected the adoption of the new Constitution. Unfortunately, the Chilean right successfully deployed its advantages during the plebiscite to nullify the social changes for which our comrades have struggled. The right-wing Rechazo (Reject) campaign enjoyed more than a 40:1 money advantage, disproportionate airtime on Chile’s television networks, and a wide-ranging social media disinformation strategy. It is clear that in Chile, just as in the United States, money and the media can have deleterious effects on the democratic process.
The constitutional process has been a constant struggle since 2019, when Chileans demonstrated en masse against not only the Sebastián Piñera government, but against the very neoliberal order created by the Pinochet constitution. Chilean president Gabriel Boric was elected in 2021 with the mandate to overturn the Pinochet constitution and draft a new document. The DSA IC supports the struggle against the Pinochet-era constitution and the efforts of Chile’s activists to build a better future for themselves and their country.
The DSA is in dialogue with the members of the Apruebo Dignidad coalition and we will continue to share our collective knowledge, strategies, successes, and failures with our Chilean brothers and sisters. As determined by the 2021 DSA Convention, our political platform likewise includes the demand for a new Constitution for the United States. The lessons we learn from Chile will inform us as we continue our work toward this final goal. Venceremos!
